Accessories!
Adding accessories to your space is the very key to making a room feel complete. Play with varying heights, groupings, colours and textures. The key is to have fun with it! Find something that speaks to you, something that you love and build around it. Make it the focal point and things will naturally flow from there.
When adding accessories there are a few things to keep in mind:
The scale of your room – putting something too large in a small space will seem overpowering. If something is small for a space, consider using it as part of a larger grouping of items
Colour - Accessories is where you can safely add those bold pops of colour. But make sure it coordinates with the full colour scheme of things. If there is nothing else in the space with that colour it will look out of place.
Consider asymmetrical arrangements – putting items into groupings of 3 is pleasing to the eye. Asymmetrical arrangements keep the room from feeling military or matchy-matchy.
Use different textures – imagine if you were to use only clear glass accessories – vases, figurines, globes, etc. – there would be no interest, no texture. Use a variety of items to create texture. Accessories can include:
Decorative boxes, bins, baskets
Toss pillows
Decorative throws
Vases
Flowers
Decorative spheres
Candles and candle holders
Statues, figurines
Trays
Pictures
Mirrors
There are lots of options for decorating with accessories – allow your personality to shine through, this is the fun part of decorating!
