Tips to make your home festive this Holiday

It’s HERE! December - again. It is time to get ready for the best time of the year. Friends, Family, food, and decorations galore. Here are some tips to make your space festive and fabulous!

  • Keep your colour scheme and style consistent throughout your house. Decide what makes you happy and run with it.

  • Traditional – red, green and gold

  • Modern - silver and blue

  • Transitional – Red and silver

  • Trendy – Jewel tones

  • Use different textures. Christmas decorating is all about layering. Using a wide variety of textures will add interest to your arrangements. Lots of greenery, twig branches, bright glass ornaments help bring out the festive feeling. If you are brave, add some feathers as a little surprise element!

  • Have music playing softly in the background. This is the finishing touch to keeping the festive ambiance all the time

Focus your decorating on 5 main places:

  • Tree – When decorating your tree, lights go on first. Weave the lights, starting at the top from the trunk to the tip of the branches as much as possible. This will help illuminate the entire tree! Next, add your ribbons, weaving in a similar fashion to the lights. Lastly add your ornaments to fill the holes. Display your favourite ones out front where they are prominent, and work your way around to fill in the back as well.

  • Mantle – When decorating your mantle, pick garland and ornaments to coordinate with the colour scheme on your tree. Add battery operated lights to light it up! Put a wreath above instead of your usual artwork. If you have a mirror above your fireplace, place the wreath in front of it.

  • Railings – Wrap your railings with garland and lights, just like your mantle. Add ornaments to coordinate with the rest of your colour and decor scheme.

  • Entrances – Welcome guests to your home. The front door is a sneak peek as to what they will find when they walk through your front door. Keep your style and colour scheme consistent with your inside decoration. Frame your door with garland, lights, ribbons, and ornaments. The front door is another great place to hang a wreath and add some whimsical items such as lanterns or urns.

  • Dining Table – Centre pieces and place settings are crucial to having the perfect table for your dinner. Centre pieces should reflect your decor style, and creativity. Use ornaments, candles and greenery to make something unique. I love this table setting. The only thing I would change would be to have the red tablecloth cover the entire table, with the white table runner as the accent to showcase the centerpiece.

The main thing about holiday decorating is it is supposed to be fun. Use your creativity, and have family and friends help. Play Christmas music loud and get in the holiday spirit!

Happy Holidays and Happy Decorating!
